Federal funds for a new National Cyber Security Center of Excellence would boost Maryland’s efforts to be the top state in cyber security.  The center is likely to receive $10 million in federal funds for its creation.

Maryland already is partnering with higher education, companies and the federal government to train 1,000 students in cyber security with the help of a $5 million, three-year federal grant.
The center is part of a project, CyberMaryland, which Gov. Martin O’Malley announced in January to build on Maryland’s information technology industry.  It would establish standards for software, explore ways to keep information technology secure and create new jobs.

The funding proposal from the Senate Appropriations Committee also includes $15 million for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg to do research on emerging cyber securities technologies and threats.
